The Abbazia di San Nicola stands in Rodengo Saiano, in Franciacorta, and is one of the largest monastic complexes in northern Italy. Founded in the 11th century by Cluniac monks, in 1446 it passed to the Benedictines of Monte Oliveto, who rebuilt it from 1478 onwards. Suppressed in 1797, it returned to the Olivetans on 8 February 1969 at the wish of Paul VI; since 2019 it has been dedicated to Saints Nicholas and Paul VI.
The abbey church, with its late 15th-century façade and stone portal, is also the parish church of Rodengo: weddings are arranged with the monastic community. Inside is Moretto’s altarpiece of Saints Peter and Paul; around it open three cloisters, from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, the last known as the Cloister of the Cistern, and the monastery still holds frescoes by Romanino and Lattanzio Gambara.
